Overcoming the tyranny of democracy

At the heart of the battle for more area of the circle and blocking reaching purple is the tyranny of democracy. The efforts to get our people in office and in power means we get our views, opinions, and narratives enforced over any objections of those who disagree. To achieve this the political process is filled with lies, misleading information, the censorship of information that is opposed, and anglicizing those we agree with and demonizing those we don't agree with. Because the issue and narratives we form are so emotional and almost define us, facts and critical thinking of all information go out the window. This is true of BOTH sides. ( See "Hacking Your Mind" episode "Us Versus Them" on PBS https://www.pbs.org/video/us-vs-them-2t0c0s/.

For years we have seen the only solution to getting our beliefs in place has been to turn our social responsibilities over to politicians. We seem to use policies and laws as tools to replace day to day compassion and direction for our lives.

With a little creativity, it does not have to be this way. If we put as much time into finding ways to respect the sovereignty of the individual as we put into justifying our judgement of others I am sure we could find ways to get what we want without putting others under the thumb of the government. Here is one idea:

I liked mayor Pete. I was not sure he was ready to for the job or understood the tyranny of democracy. But I liked him because I thought he was authentic. During a debate I heard him say one of the things he would make a priority of (government paid for) healthcare for illegal immigrants. Personally I do not want to see anyone who needs healthcare be denied it, especially innocent children who have no say in where they live or how they got here. But as I heard others discuss this I also understood the opposition. People who grew up believing if they worked hard they could own a home, provide for their families, and someday retire, have had that dream disappear. They live month to month, wondering if they can pay their bills each month, hoping some event in their life does not require money they do not have. They can barely pay their insurance premium. They wonder why someone who might not pay taxes on all their earnings ( and might bring home more after taxes because of being paid in cash) get free healthcare when they struggle to pay their premium. Whether or not you agree with their view (factually or not) you can understand their stance. It is not about the relatively small amount it would cost each citizen. It is about another straw on their back.

Now what if a non-profit was started to help those in need get healthcare and tax paying citizens could donate say up to 10% of their taxes to charitable organizations and receive a tax credit. A tax credit is a dollar for dollar tax saving versus a tax write-off that reduces taxes only by the tax rate and requires out of pocket money. Under this idea no one has to pay money out of pocket and the government does not need to spend tax dollars on a wide array of social causes. A person can direct up to 10% of their taxes for the social causes of their choice. They could direct 2% to healthcare of illegal immigrants and 3% to pay for abortions, and 2% to climate research. etc. They would be putting their money where their mouth is and not put other people's money there.

Politicians would hate it as they could not utilize these social issues to get and keep power. Activists would not put their efforts into getting someone elected or influencing public policy but instead would become advocates for their charities addressing the people to get donations without regard to political influence. Instead of getting politicians and the system to change we would be working toward getting people's hearts to change.

Question: If someone is forced to act in a way you want through policy or law, have we really charged the world?

Yes ____

Only until the next party comes to power and changes it back ____

No. Real change is when we grow through respecting each other's view. _____
